5 Dos and Don’t’s When Looking for Curtains

By arya

While it might seem an easy process, finding the perfect curtains for a room in your house is going to take so much more than just finding a design that you like and purchasing them. There is so much more that you need to consider and that’s why we’ve made this task a little easier for you by showing you five of the biggest do’s and don’t’s when looking for new curtains.

Do Consider Their Purpose

Are your curtains going to be there just to add aesthetic beauty to a living room? Perhaps you want blackout curtains to ensure darkness for an entertainment room? Understand what it is that you want from your curtains rather than just picking out something that you like. If you experience warm summers and cold winters, you’re going to want curtains that will keep the heat in during the winter months and let the light in during the summer.

Don’t Skimp on Size

We know that curtains can add a bit of strain to the budget when it comes to redecorating but the worst thing you can do is to try and save some money by sizing your curtains too small. At the minimum, your curtains should be double the width of the window that they will be covering. As for length, again, you want to make sure that they are long enough to cover the window and then some.

Do Consider Color and Design

While the functionality of a curtain is extremely important, how they look is also something that should be considered. They can take up a large amount of visual space in your room, so think long and hard about the color, design, and style that you want to use. You could even opt to design your own custom curtains if you’re unable to find something that matches your tastes.

Don’t Ignore the hardware

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that there is more to curtains than just the curtains themselves. Of course, the curtains need to be hung from hardware and thus it’s important that the hardware matches the design of your room almost as much as it is the curtains themselves. They should also be strong enough to hold the drapes, especially if they are heavier drapes such as velvets.

Do Your Research

Even once you have a good idea of what you want and how much the curtains are going to cost you, you really need to put in some work by shopping around. You’ll be amazed at how much you can save by not just buying your chosen curtains from the first place that you see. Online is where the best savings can be had but this does not mean that you shouldn’t go looking around on the high street as well.

If you can heed the advice above and basically just take your time when selecting new curtains, you’ll stand a much better chance of finding some that will be the perfect match for your room. There really is no need to go rushing into buying the first curtains that you lay eyes on as this is when there is an increased chance of making a bad decision.
